Ok, so I have been wracking my brain on this post. Which has caused me not to post anything for a couple of weeks. There have been a couple of times I wanted to post something and thought, "I need to post my 100th post." Traditionally, for your 100th post, you are supposed to post 100 things about yourself. I actually started once and got up to about 50. It took a LONG time and I had things to do, do I deleted it. And thus, there was no 100th post.
And here I am again, contemplating the infamous 100th post. But, now I have an idea. I'm opening my blog to the first 100 random questions. So, leave a post, ask a question or two. And when I get 100 I will post the answers (at my discretion). My goal is to get 100 comments on this blog. We'll see if that happens. It's my birthday today and I'm feeling optimistic!

I got the idea (months ago) from Aimee to post 12 random pictures of your day on the 12th of the month. But, I can never seem to remember until the evening of, when I saw Aimee's post. Fortunately, I had taken some pictures today, since is Easter. Here are 12 pictures of Sunday, April 12, 2009.

We shed a few tears going through old family albums. There were pictures of my beautiful mother, still in her teens, with long dark hair, prior to and in the early years of marriage. Pictures of my dad, with thick hair and sideburns, which thankfully went out of style in the 70s, but are humorous to look at now. Photos of lost, but still loved, grandparents and great grandparents.
I will share some of these in time, I'm sure, as I sort them and begin to tell the story. But, I wanted to share this treasure. This is my maternal great grandmother's family Bible. I'm not sure when it was given/received because none of the information was filled in, including the family tree, which was a disappointment. But, there were many treasures to be found in Grandma's Bible.

It has been a busy couple of months. Really, has it been almost two months since I last posted? Well then, I guess I should give you peek at what I have been up to. In a sense, my excuse for not posting more.
1. Well there's grad school. Two mornings per week I have class and one night every other I meet with a group of students on an independent study project. This is fun and educational and usually involves coffee or food, but it's still work. Two full days per week of internship. I love this too, but it's quite a time investment. Then there's homework. Well, that just squeezed in wherever an extra hour or two appears. Sometimes the time just has to be made. It feels like my waking hours are spent either in class or doing homework. But, that's not all I'm up to. I'm an overachiever...
2. My oldest son an I are volunteering for a program called Circle of friends. This one evening per week is spent in the company of a "special friend," a child who has lost a loved one. My special friend is the same age as my middle son and he witnessed his younger brother's tragic death (due to confidentiality I cannot give more detail). Each session we are given a topic to talk about while we play together. It is heartbreaking to hear some of these children's stories, but a gift to be able to be there for them to share with.
3. I am also involved in a couple of research projects. One taking about 10 hours a weeks, that I'm actually getting paid for. One, that will look good on a resume and gives me another opportunity to work with my favorite prof. These will both prepare for the grueling work of writing my thesis next year!
4. I am the PTA secretary at my children's school. This means I go to all the meetings and take meticulous notes (ha!) and in theory, I am supposed to prepare and print all the notes that go home regarding PTA meetings, movie nights, and other activities. I have been kind of slacking in this area this semester. It's a good thing I have a good team of officers I can count on to back me up.
5. I am on for the month of April to teach Sunday school. I love teaching Sunday school, but sometimes it gets overwhelming to plan lessons and activities. It's especially hard because my class ranges from Kindergarten to 6th grade, in about 15-20 kids. We do not have enough teachers currently to split the class. But, it's hard to find activities to engage all of the kids at the same time. Feel free to pray for more Sunday school teachers!
Then there are the little things like doctor, dentist, eye doctor appointments, teacher conferences, other random meetings that fill up my days. And I just haven't made time to blog (although, I have found Bejeweled on facebook).
Today, one of my classmates interviewed me for a paper she was writing. It was about the effects of grad school on my life. Questions like: How has grad school effected your social life? Um, what social life? How has grad school effected your time management? Um, I'm lousy at time management and I like to procrastinate. Grad school and procrastination do not go well together. And I need to learn to write everything in my planner. Finally, How do you practice self care? Ha ha ha ha... Seriously, I have a husband, four boys and I'm a grad student. You've got to be kidding me.
So, I'm looking for tips on self care. Help me out here, what do you do for yourself?

Here the kids are watching as each student gets their SOM medal and the Vice Principal reads the letter that the teacher wrote about that child. Don't they look excited?
I am so proud of Jacob and his achievements, both academically and in his character. He truly is an awesome kid! I love you Jacob!
Did I mention that Jacob was tested for the Gifted and Talented Education program? He was invited and will be attending the school for gifted students this fall. He is a smart kid, and he knows it. I wonder when it will hit him that the other kids at this school are just as smart as he is...

All I want for Christmas is my...wait, that's a long time to wait. Here is Jacob sans his two front teeth. You can also see that we are going to need some orthodontic work on those bottom teeth.
The tooth fairy was quite generous last night too. Maybe it was because she saved gas snagging two teeth at one house. Or maybe, it was just that there were two boys and two teeth, but she gave them each two dollars. They were both very happy this morning. Now, a question for you: What does the tooth fairy do with all those these?

My motivation? A little black dress, that I plan to wear on a little cruise, to Alaska in June. We will celebrate our tenth anniversary in May (but cannot go until school is out). I want to look good for my husband (who thinks I'm beautiful anyway).
Additionally, I want to get back to eating healthier. Last semester was crazy. There didn't seem to be enough hours in the day for school, homework, grading, laundry, cooking...you get the idea. This semester (hopefully) will be a little lighter. I also plan to stick more closely to planned menus. That's the plan anyway. I'll let you know how it goes. Plus, if I can't think of anything else to write about, I can share the menu. That will keep people coming back, HA!
And the final piece of my plan: A little half marathon in May. Brian and I are planning to walk the River Parkway half marathon. We can currently walk 4 miles easily and 6 without too much effort. Now to bump it up to 13. I am looking forward to this. I think the toughest part is finding the time to walk. We usually put in 4 miles after the little boys are in bed. That is one of the perks of having teens at home. I will keep you posted on this as well.
So, those are my little plans for the first half of this year. Come back often. Cheer me on.

As I watched the inauguration, at home alone, I wished I was there. I wish I could say I was there on this historical day. I did not vote for Obama because he is African American; nor did I vote for him in spite of it. I voted for him, because I believe he supports the things that are important to me. I also acknowledge the significance that this day brings to the African American community. They can honestly say to their children, "you can be anything you dream to be when you grow up, even president." I believe Dr. Martin Luther King was smiling down today. As a country, we have come so far.
Obama's speech was inspiring and full of hope for our country. I love that he spoke of us in unity, the things "we" need to do. How "we" can help each other and ourselves. I look forward to seeing what Obama's plans are for the next four years. I believe we will be in a better place four years from now. Now, we have a lot of work to do.
My prayer today is for our country; for the wisdom of it's leaders; for the unity of it's people. We are a great country and I proud to be an American!

These photos were taken at a CART expedition. The larger robot is Hog Bog. During competition, it sports a pig. For luck? perhaps. The smaller one is Pot Bot (I think).

So, that's 7 yarn projects in some state of progress. It's a good thing I have several needles, lol. I really need to get some things completed. Thanks for the challenge. Sometimes, you realize how many things you have floating, until you pull them all out and take pictures.

For Christmas, I got Brian tickets to see Phantom of the Opera in San Francisco. Tuesday, we drove up, just the two of us!
There was a weird mix up at the hotel when we went to check in. There was a reservation for a Brian Bernard (same last name). Brian insisted that he middle name is not Bernard, but there was not another reservation under his name. So we took this one. There was a not in the computer that there was a gift bag for this reservation. We looked at each other. Maybe this was not our reservation. The guy brought the bag and asked if I wanted to look in it; so I did.
Well, this bag was definitely for me! Inside, there was a bag of chips, a jar of salsa, some dark chocolate cookies and mini margaritas. (Cue the music...these are a few of my favorite things) There was also a note from my friend Nora welcoming us to San Francisco. What a thoughtful idea. Thanks Nora!
Unfortunately, I caught some stomach bug and woke up the next morning feeling miserable. We had planned to meet up with Nora and explore the Academy of Science. Sorry we missed that, maybe next time. Instead, I stayed in bed as long as possible, then we came home.
I went to bed early and Brian woke me up in time to have cider with the kids. What a way to ring in the new year. It can only get better, right?
